Synopsis:

Saichi Sugimoto is a hardened soldier who fought in the Russo-Japanese War and earned the nickname «Sugimoto the Immortal.» His combat honors mean little to him when he’s discharged from the army due to a certain incident, but he has a goal to achieve, a promise to keep, and for that, he’ll need money. His first idea is to join the recent Hokkaido gold rush and try his luck, but fate has a more interesting, and equally lucrative, challenge in store for him. When a strange man tells him the story of how a thief stole a large quantity of gold from a group of Ainu and then hid his loot, his eyes light up.

Could it be a fabrication? The man tells him that the only way to find the stolen gold is to locate a series of men who were imprisoned with the thief and who bear the clues tattooed on their bodies. But Hokkaido is a harsh region and its nature unforgiving, so while he’s still deciding whether such a story is anything more than a tall tale, he’ll have to fight to protect his life from a huge bear… and the one who will appear to his rescue is an Ainu girl who seems to know something about the story the old man told him.
